You may have traveled from afar to come to NYC but that actually describes so many people who travel to do something amazing in this amazing city. Welcome! That said, you are gravely disappointing so far.
The Asian American community does not need to be pegged as a model minority. We are people of color too and your narrative of our children’s representation in a few NYC schools does not accurately picture our ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic diversity and tremendous struggles faced by the Asian American community. Your narrative painting us a community of privilege hurts me and my children deeply.
Furthermore, until you meaningfully include the needs of students with disabilities in your conversation about segregation and equity, your work in that area will never be complete. The omission of this community in your work so far with the SHSAT schools is a perfect example. Have you not noticed that screened high schools are required to admit students with disabilities and SHSAT schools are not? Why don’t you care?
Please, do the right thing. Include the disability community in your quest to end school segregation.
